ACTIVITY: Squishy Blocks

These blocks are both hard and squishy! So wonderful for sensory processing, as it allows children to recognise opposing textures and work those hand muscles to squish them to find the Duplo inside!

TO MAKE:
– Mix 2L of gelatin according to packet instructions, and add a few drops of food colouring.
– Line a large rectangular tray with plastic wrap
– Pour the gelatin into the tray, and place Duplo blocks into the gelatin
– Set overnight in the fridge
– Turn upside down onto a plate/tub for play, peel off the plastic wrap, and cut into ‘blocks’ around the Duplo!

An activity like this is great for:

– Fine motor skills
– Sensory processing
– Cognitive development (sensory play develops more and stronger neural pathways in the brain)
– Language skills – connect new words to new texture, eg. ‘Squish’
