Understanding Your Child's Needs: A Guide for Parents

Categories: General Parenting

5 minute read

Think back to a prior relationship where your needs were not understood or met.

How did you feel?

What thoughts were on “repeat” in your mind?

What do you wish the other person would have been able to do for you?

Would you want your child/teenager to feel these feelings about your relationship with them?

It is a gift to be in relationship with someone that truly understands what you need. This is especially true for the children and teenagers you have been given the opportunity to raise. ParentTV expert Sandy Phoenix has identified 5 cups our children and teenagers need filled in order to thrive

Survival and safety cup. This is not only their opportunity to sleep, eat, rest but also knowing they are safe and secure. This cup is just as much psychological as it is physiological. The outcome of a full Survival and Safety cup: Security.

Love and connection cup. This cup is where our children discover that they belong and are fully accepted. The outcome of a full Love and Connection cup: Self-worth.

Mastery cup. This is the ability to be able to be in control of your environment. The outcome of a full Mastery cup: Self-esteem.

Freedom cup. This cup is where your child is provided the opportunity to make decisions successfully. The outcome of a full Freedom cup: Autonomy.

Fun cup. Play, learning and joy. The outcome of a full Fun cup: Joy.

All children are unique and each of the above cups will be needed differently for each person. As we begin to learn their personalities and preferences, we will be able to meet them right where they need it most.
